‘Follow This’: Netflix Teases Captivating Informative New Series With a Clip That’ll Tease Your Senses
After successful forays into the true crime and feature-length film genres, Netflix seems to be trying its hand at the informative documentary series. Its latest original, “Follow This,” features the experiences of journalists as they research various story topics.
That doesn’t mean it’s a news show. If anything, “Follow This” is more like “How It’s Made” with intangible topics. Created in partnership with Buzzfeed News, the 20-plus-episode series is intended to provide viewers with content ranging from “unexpected cultural phenomena to controversial social issues,” according to the streaming service.
In this clip from Episode 1, it’s definitely more of the former. Titled “The Internet Whisperers,” the first episode centers on journalist Scaachi Koul as she explores the rapidly growing world of autonomous sensory meridian response (ASMR) videos. Defined as a “calming, pleasurable feeling often accompanied by a tingling sensation,” the experience occurs in response to certain noises, like whispering or tapping on textured surfaces.
The noises vary for each person, but the result is a tingling sensation that starts on the scalp and slowly works its way down the body. Though not needed for the included segment, we highly recommend the use of headphones when viewing ASMR videos. It makes the experience more immersive.
It’s also indicative of the series as whole. This episode focuses on a fascinating and strange topic that viewers aren’t likely to know about. That’s a theme that extends to the series. Looking to be both parts informative and inventive, “Follow This” seems like a confident step out of Netflix’s comfort zone that doesn’t sacrifice the platform’s penchant for eclectic content.
