Sam Mendes has confirmed that he will not direct the next installment in the James Bond movie franchise. The director revealed the news at the Hay Festival of Literature in Wales, the Associated Press reports.

“It was an incredible adventure, I loved every second of it,” Mendes said. “But I think it’s time for somebody else.”

The helmer had worked on the spy franchise for five years now, stating that he hoped the next Bond director would come from an “unexpected direction,” just as he had. Mendes also expressed his desire to work on something new stating: “I’m a storyteller. And at the end of the day, I want to make stories with new characters.”

The “American Beauty” helmer first jumped on board the 007 franchise when he directed “Skyfall” in 2012. The film was praised for bringing new depth to the characters and was a box-office hit. “Spectre” (2015) on the other hand received mixed reviews, with some critics saying it was the same thing they’ve seen before.

At this time it is unknown if Daniel Craig will reprise his role of Bond for a fifth time. Rumors have been circulating that Tom Hiddleston is in talks for the part but nothing has been confirmed by Sony.

Mendes even added that fans shouldn’t be campaigning for their choice in the next lead since the decision is based solely on the series’ producer.

“It’s not a democracy … Barbara Broccoli decides who is going to be the next Bond, end of story,” he said adding that Broccoli chose Craig, who at the time had “zero” support from fans.
