‘Stranger Things’: Watch a Video of Netflix’s Throwback Series Side by Side With Its Retro Influences

If you’ve watched “Stranger Things,” you’ll surely have noticed by now that Netflix‘s latest binge-worthy show is replete with references to ’80s movies. (And if you haven’t watched “Stranger Things,” why haven’t you watched “Stranger Things”?) Courtesy of an intrepid Vimeo user, one Ulysse Thevenon, you can now see excerpts of the Duffer Brothers’ throwback series side by side with the movies that have most visibly influenced it, a few of which are from the ’70s.

Set to the show’s instant-classic theme song — itself a bit of John Carpenter worship — the nearly five-minute video is unsurprisingly heavy in Steven Spielberg clips. “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial” and “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” abound in the video, which features no diegetic sound from either “Stranger Things” or the rest of its influences, which include “Alien,” “The Goonies,” “Firestarter” and even “Commando.”

The eight-episode series has received favorable reviews and become a minor pop-culture sensation in the nearly two weeks since it became available on Netflix. A second season has already been confirmed.
