A Filmmaker Sets Out to Bring His Late Father’s Screenplay to Life in ‘Finding Groovopolis’

A Filmmaker Sets Out to Bring His Late Father's Screenplay to Life in 'Finding Groovopolis'
Filmmaker Sets Out Bring His Late Father's Screenplay Life 'Finding Groovopolis'

Here’s your daily dose of an indie film, web series, TV pilot, what-have-you in progress — at the end of the week, you’ll have the chance to vote for your favorite.

In the meantime: Is this a project you’d want to see? Tell us in the comments.

Finding Groovopolis

Logline: By uncovering his father’s screenplay from the 90s, filmmaker Wil Kristin explores his dad’s work-free, free-love quest for happiness.

Elevator Pitch: After my dad, David Kristin, passed away from melanoma in 2012 I wanted to pay tribute to him somehow. The opportunity arose when I uncovered a screenplay that he co-wrote in the 90s called “Groovopolis.” Since the discovery, I’ve been investigating my dad’s life, including his struggles with mental illness, cancer, work and family. “Finding Groovopolis” is a film project unlike any I’ve attempted before, blending my father’s work with my own — fiction with non-fiction. There are three ways you can help: back the project on Kickstarter by June 27, spread the word and get in touch if the project resonates.

Production Team:
Wil Kristin – Director

The film will also feature:

David Kristin – main subject (actor who appeared in “The Terminator,” “Moonlighting,” etc.)
Jeffrey Polman – screenwriter and co-writer of “Groovopolis”
Jesse Kristin – drummer, Jukebox the Ghost

About the Film: My father was somewhat mysterious to me. He was also a hoarder. After uncovering his screenplay and reading it, I realized there were many parallels between its characters and themes and my family’s reality. For example, in the film the main character is transformed by music overheard on an island and in real life my father played us a tape that transformed our lives and influenced my brother to become a musician. “Finding Groovopolis” is a chance for me to collaborate with my father in a way that I couldn’t while he was alive. RIYL: “Stories We Tell,” “My Architect”

Current Status: Currently fundraising and completing pre-production for “Groovopolis” scenes. The overall documentary portion of the film is in production.
