Netflix Announces May Return Ricky Gervais' 'Derek'

Less than a year after the first season premiered on Netflix, Ricky Gervais’ heart-warming comedy “Derek” will return with six new episodes in May. Season two will be available in full beginning Friday, May 30th at 12:01am PT in all Netflix territories other than the UK, where the series will air on its commissioning network, Channel 4.

“I was blown away by the affection from around the world for the first series, particularly the emotional connection it seemed to make with people,” Gervais said in a statement. “I hope they like the second offering as much.”

“Ricky is a terrific partner and he has created a heartfelt character, in Derek, that Netflix members have fallen in love with,” Ted Sarandos, Chief Content Officer at Netflx added. “His attention to detail and relentless vision to change conventional storytelling on television is perfectly aligned with what we are trying to do with our original series.”

Gervais served as writer, director, executive producer and star of the half-hour comedy set in a retirement home and focusing on its sweet title character who could not be happier with his job. The show co-stars Karl Pilkington, David Earl, and Kerry Godliman, and the first six episodes are streaming on Netflix.
