Michael Bay Reveals R-Rated, ‘Very Quentin’ Tarantino ‘Transformers’ Pitch That Was Backburnered
Michael Bay’s claims that “Transformers: The Last Knight,” the fifth installment in the blockbuster franchise, will be his last. The trailer for the picture recently debuted this week, which features the star-studded cast and Decepticons destroying everything in sight. While this might be his last time directing the Takara and Hasbro-created toys, Bay revealed that he had additional plans to make an R-rated “Transformers.”
Speaking to Collider, the filmmaker stated that he’s pitched the idea ahead of the Bumblebee film, due out in 2018, but that it most likely will never happen.
“You know, yeah, that would be fun. There’s actually one idea that would be really fun R-rated, with Bumblebee,” he said. “I don’t wanna say, but it would be really fun. Very Quentin [Tarantino], you know.”
In the interview Bay even expressed interest in working on the standalone film, but he’s not in yet.
“I would be very involved but we’ve got someone just starting work on the script right now,” he said. “Steven [S. DeKnight] is involved too but he’s shooting too.
The truth of the matter is that Hasbro would probably never sign off on an R-rated film, they tend to stick to their PG-13 rating. As for what fans can expect from the standalone Bumblebee movie; the script is being written by “Shut In” scribe Christina Hodson and it will mainly focus on the young Autobut, not any other Transformers.
“It’s Bumblebee’s story. I don’t think you’ll see a lot more in it,” producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura explained. “We’ll see as it evolves. In the treatment form? No.”
The producer also gave some insight on “The Last Knight” and how certain things might be set up for the spinoff movie.
“Some of the things will have a very direct relationship,” he explained. “You’ll see some things in here that are laying a pipe. You won’t necessarily know that it’s laying a pipe for another movie, but it’s there.” Adding, “But we’re not making this movie to set up the other movies. That’s what I’m trying to say. If you get too carried away with that, you stop thinking about this movie.”
