John Carney, who wrote and directed “Once” several years ago, made quite an impression with the indie musical romance, and now he’s coming back to the under-appreciated genre with a bigger budget and bigger stars. The filmmaker’s upcoming dramedy “Begin Again” (formerly titled “Can a Song Save Your Life?” when it world premiered at the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival), stars Oscar nominees Keira Knightley and Mark Ruffalo.
The film centers on a record executive (Ruffalo) who’s just been fired and finds solace in the music of a young ingenue (Knightley) who’s just been dumped by her rock star boyfriend. The two of them subsequently decide to team up and make music in any way that they can in order to find the redemption and comfort that only their partnership seems to provide. The trailer features Ruffalo in a lovably comic role, while Knightley’s vocal talents shine more so than they have before.
“Begin Again” will be released by July 4, and closes this year’s Tribeca Film Festival next month. Check out the trailer below:
