‘Mad Men’ Creator Matthew Weiner Returning to TV with New Anthology Series from Amazon and the Weinstein Company

The two companies won a costly bidding war for the show's first season.

A year and a half after “Mad Men” gave the world a Coke, Matthew Weiner is officially returning to the small screen. Deadline reports that Amazon and the Weinstein Company have emerged as the winner in a heated bidding war for Weiner’s next television venture, an eight-episode series that sold for $70 million.

The untitled anthology series will be set in the present day and take place in several locations across the globe, according to Deadline. In addition to creating, writing and executive producing the series, Weiner is also set to direct roughly half of the first season’s episodes. Prior to “Mad Men,” he played an increasingly central role on “The Sopranos” as a writer and producer throughout the HBO drama’s six-season run.
