2018 Oscar Predictions: Best Original Song

Music was integral to Disney/Pixar’s animated musical “Coco,” as Lee Unkrich’s love letter to Mexico and Día de los Muertos. Signature ballad “Remember Me” is the likeliest winner of the Best Original Song Oscar to come along in a while, written by “Let It Go” songwriters Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez.

With this category, the Academy music branch tends to lean into musicals and major pop stars singing songs over the closing credits.

Also on the musical front, “La La Land” lyricists Benj Pasek and Justin Justin Paul wrote “This is Me” for “The Greatest Showman,” which has become a surprise hit; Keala Settle’s emotional audition video has gone viral on YouTube.

Among established musicians, Sufjan Stevens wrote and sings “Mystery of Love” for “Call My By Your Name,” while “Mighty River” from “Mudbound” features music and lyric by Mary J. Blige, Raphael Saadiq and Taura Stinson. And Oscar-winner Common (“Selma”) and Andra Day perform nine-time Oscar-nominated songwriter Diane Warren’s “Stand Up for Something” for “Marshall.”
